[DISCUSSION] The Xancastle interface |
|
|
So what are your thoughts?
Either you can't stand the gay looking colors and want it back to plain nothing again, or you like the look and feel but need more diversity. Right?
Well, what's up there right now is just a placeholder, it's not meant to stay up there. It's just a default look and feel until I get some feedback on to what the members and staff want up there as far as the link images.
Hell maybe we can have volunteers design some different images representing the different sections of the board.
I worked for 10 years on XanCastle, and the GM is the first domain other than my own for it to be implemented. I know you'll either love it or hate it.
Xan Castle is a customizable interface. It turns a plain website or forum into a customizable clean looking easy to use web interface.
For those who can't stand looking at it, just browse to http://www.gamersmafia.us/gm/ and it will all go away.
For those that kinda like it but think it needs something else up there besides colored hitman logos to seperate the different sections, this is the thread to voice your opinion.
All suggestions will be taken into consideration, and once all the staff agrees on them then the changes will take affect.
The categories were all removed, so that I could make a more streamlined forum, it's more compact so it fits better on smaller screens like laptops, and it also fits better within XanCastle.
Also the splash screen will now be a place for announcements like when gaming tournaments will take place, when the board is scheduled for maintenance, and when live chats or events are coming. It will all be posted on the splash screen.
So go ahead, tell us what you think. Hate it? Love it? Like it but..? Tell us! _________________

Alright.
The XanCastle interface is designed to operate within a screen resolution at a minimum of 1152x864 which is a standard for many PC gamers, and its what I use on my mac. It's designed for a 17 inch monitor or above.
Are you using something smaller than that? 1024x768 perhaps? If I remember right, a 15 inch monitor was the 1024x768 res and a 13 inch monitor was 800x600.
I can probably make a 1024x768 version but I have no plans on making a 800x600 version at all. Everything would be so small you wouldn't be able to read anything.
If your computer can use 1152x864, try it out and see how you like it. _________________

Right this moment, XanCastle will fill the entire space of the browser when the resolution is set up at 1152x864. I did months of testing and I know for a fact this works on all major browsers at this resolution (It was tested on Safari, Opera, FireFox, IE6 and 7 and it finally looks identical in all those browsers at this res).
I picked that res because it's the most popular resolution on the web today, that's the only reason I chose that resolution initially. But that's not set in stone to my specifications for this project. I only finished version one in December 2008, so I can re-adjust it. I also made a mini version for FaceBook which is about 1/2 complete at the moment.
As far as the responses here in this thread, I'm getting mixed signals here as to which resolution you guys are talking about, and they may be two different resolutions altogether. I want to make it work. It's no trouble at all to me.
Lion and Reno, initially it looked to me like Lion was saying that the XanCastle interface doesn't fit the screen as in Lion has the monitor resolution set below 1152x864, a resolution SMALLER then is needed for it to fit perfectly.
Lion, if your screen res is at 1024x768 , having it this size will force scroll bars at the bottom. Is that what you meant by not fitting into the screen? (If it is then your screen res is too small)
But then the next post by Reno says it doesn't fit my browser either which is telling me he is at a res HIGHER than is needed and there is some extra space on the end. Having it larger will force extra space on the right side. (If that's what you meant then your screen res is too high)
The key here is the language used to describe what you guys meant. It's obviously two different things.
So what I'm getting from these two posts is both of you are talking about two completely different resolutions , in which neither one is the resolution that fits perfectly into the XanCastle Interface.
I'm thinking that specifically Reno is at one resolution higher, possibly at 1280x960 and that you Lion are at 1024x768, one resolution smaller.
Okay here's how to figure it out, and I will adjust the code in the interface to fit any screen 1024x768 or Higher, centering it so that it will maximize the space it takes up and limit the empty space it uses on the side. I don't have this interface set up at 100% I have it set up to display at a specific pixel locations.
Again I will not make an 800x600 version, that would be way too small for this interface to work. For screens smaller than 1024x768 I am reserving a mini version that will do the same thing, I'm setting that to fit as a facebook app.
I will make it easier though for those members here that have low resolution monitors. I'll adjust it, it's all a matter of just tweaking the CSS and putting in conditional statements in the javascript to load one CSS or another depending on the monitor resolution.
But first I need to know if you two are even talking about the same resolution, becasue if you are that makes it 10 times easier. Maybe I just got lost in translation. It happens sometimes.
So to figure it out, I went to Microsoft's website and grabbed the exact photos and instructions that they say is the right way to check and change the screen resolution.
Those instructions are below. Use the instructions below and if you can adjust it to
1152x864 Resolution and then tell me if it's still not fitting, that would be nice, because if it's still not fitting at that resolution then I do need a major tweak rather than a small tweak.
How to check and change your monitor's resolution in Windows XP
1. Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
2. In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Settings tab.
3. Drag the Screen resolution slider to the left to decrease the resolution of your monitor, making text and pictures appear larger. Or drag the Screen resolution slider to the right to increase your monitor’s resolution, making text and pictures appear smaller.
4. Click Apply to have the new resolution take effect.
5. If the Monitor Settings dialog box appears, look at your display. If you like the new resolution, click Yes. If you do not like the resolution, click No, and return to step 3 to try a different resolution.
6. Click OK.
Photos were grabbed from microsoft corporation at https://web.archive.org/web/20061110020529/http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/personalize/resolution.mspx _________________

Okay , thanks that's the information I needed to know before starting the coding on making XanCastle fit on your respective resolutions. I'll get on it ASAP.
Remember, XanCastle is NOT a portal. It's an Internet application and its running on this domain. There is no external code at all. Think of it as another mod here on this site, like the newsflash scroller and the Famous Last Words shoutboard. It's something that can be customized to any website. Now that I have the right infomation, I will modify the code to fit this particular domain.
Thank you for your patience. Expect the XanCastle refit to be complete by 6pm PST on Monday the 26th of January 2009. _________________

My resolution is 1280x1024. Is there a way to have the xan castle stretch to fit automatically? _________________

I completed the refit but I didn't activate it yet. No, I don't use percentage in my web designs because its too random and won't work across browsers. The only way to get it to work across browsers (meaning looking identical on all browsers and operating systems) is to have it set to absolute pixel locations.
This means a different CSS script for each resolution I want to support. This is a web application, same as if I was writing UNREAL tournament video game would you expect it to stretch and obscure the graphics regardless of the resolution? No, that would make it look "half-ass" as you put it so well before. UT uses a different graphics script depending on the res, thats why you have a preferences in the game to choose the res.
Its the same here. My app was using only one res because that is the one I designed it for. It didn't seem to look right in any other res so I fixed it to work in those additional resolutions.
It now looks the same on every resolution in every browser. I just haven't tested it on this domain yet. I'll do that tomorrow. I took all day to do the re-code for it today.
It now detects your resolution when you browse to the gamersmafia.us domain and picks a CSS to load depending on the resolution. If its not any of the 3 then it picks the original one I had which is the default.
In this case XanCastle is the application and the internet is the operating system.
This is the most complex programming I have ever done. I'm glad I'm done finally. You'll see the result in a few hours after I wake up, I'll activate it. Its here now its not activated. _________________
