I tried version 1 and it worked, whereas under version 2 it didn't. When using version 2 all i would get is a regular index page without thumbnails. I thought versions previous to v2 didn't support php5. I really didn't expect v1 to work, but i thought i had nothing to loose in trying it out.

I looked and there are several folders in there we could get rid of but some posts content would disappear. But I guess its part of your "cleaning house" idea. I counted an extra 40MB we could save just by deleting the strip tease flash video I posted, the custom flash player I made and your folder, the one with "Da_Vincis_Notebook-Internet_Porn.mp3" inside it.

I have no idea how big the filespace is or was originally. I thought it was unlimited until i got a limit reached error a couple of weeks ago. Remove all the crap you see fit to take out. Its been pretty much seph's and my personal filespace for a long time.

Well Mr Hung,

I don't think Mr Reno here was talking about the database, we were talking about the FTP area, the actual file space that is used up as webspace. Nothing at all to do with posts.

I cleared out nearly 40MB now, so we are fine at a the moment.

The limit is 150MB of disk space which I thought was unlimited, but I guess it isn't.

We are 10MB below now with using up only 140MB at the moment.

As for Bandwidth its still at 8GB of bandwidth a month. Which is pretty good for a free host and can keep us good for now.
posts with spam like the one with hundreds of smilies in it, then go for it. That doesn't do us any good to haveposts like that in our database.

The Database

But think of it this way, the actual database to run this forum only takes up 5MB of actual database space. What takes up room in the database is the data that makes up the posts. One post can take up 37K of database. Multiply that by 40,000 and you have a problem.

So there are some tricks we can use to minimize the database use. One is if we take out the ability for users to edit a post, that is if they hit submit before they are finished posting, they are forced to post again. Thats a trick that some forums use to make it look like they have more posts than they do. But the downside to that is, it could have a negative effect on visitors if they see duplicate posts everywhere, they might mistake it for spam and decide that this place has been taken over by kids and just leave.

Another suggestion is to just limit the size of how long and short a post can be.
We make it a standard size. Not more than a page, but not less than a standard 12 word sentence.

Or we just let the forum prune itself when posts get older than a year. The upside is the database always remains the same size, the downside is we would always have to be on our toes to make sure the number of topics remain fresh.

Either way its a wash. I vote for 1 one year prune on all topics, and that we keep the editing for everyone. As long as we can have peaceful disagreements in the debate forums and counter any human-made spam with our volunteer moderators, we are fine.

If you agree, I'll make it happen. That will keep the database tidy and like Mr Hung there said, we can always post more topics.
