Disallowed Usernames |

In our fight against Spam Bots, here is what I've been doing..
Instead of banning them which is kind of pointless because they can simply use a different IP, or username, I've made sure they cannot try and re-register under the same bot name again once they are deleted.
These are bots are now listed in the "Disallowed usernames" list.
DO NOT delete any user listed in that list unless you know for a fact they are not a bot. The list can only be seen by administrators and is accessible from the admin panel.
The list is intended to keep anyone at all from using that exact name as a username.
I have something in the works to tell if the new person registering is in fact a bot or not, its not absolutely 100% foolproof, but it will help a great deal.
We don't want to inadvertantly delete someone who is a real person just because their username seems like one a bot would use. So we need something that can tell the difference.
I found a mod that does that and I am researching it to see if it can be useful here in stopping bots from registering.
It checks the e-mail address of the registered person and if the address is real it lets them register, if not, it sends a notice to the admin of the board (in this case the whole admin group) that the user that tried to register is a bot (because the e-mail address was fake).
Like I said this won't stop all the bots, because some use real e-mail addresses, but it will stop the majority of them.
I'll let everyone know when the mod is installed. In the meantime, I will keep on deleting bots and adding the names to the dis-allowed list. _________________
